in the dark ages of the 1980's, before people even
knew how to spell "http:// <http:///> " or ever heard
of Amazon.com (or any ".com" for that matter), Rothstein Associates'
management consultants heard a lot of requests for help finding books
and other documents. We published a bibliography and, amazingly, people
started sending us money and expecting us to send them
these books.
So, in 1989 we officially launched The Rothstein Catalog On Disaster
Recovery as a division of Rothstein Associates. We distributed 50,000
copies internationally of our first 24-page
printed catalog.
"So," you ask, "what's with the cow?" Simple - we
were cheap. Our talented graphic artist, Sheila Kwiatek (and humble web
site designer), was instructed to keep our design and production costs
down, since we didn't know what kind of response to expect to that first
catalog. She came up with a clever juxtaposition of some 19th-century,
public-domain clip-art of a cow, a lantern, and an explosion - and Mrs.
O'Leary's cow (The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, for those of us too
young to remember) became our unofficial mascot. Over the years, many
of our clients have taken to calling us "The cow
catalog" - watch out, Ben & Jerry! Move over, Gateway!

As The Rothstein Catalog On Disaster Recovery has evolved over
the past 13 years, so has "Daisy," our mascot (one of Mrs. O'Leary's
cows' rumored names). She may be more cartoonish than before, but she
is no less dedicated. She has proudly served us and our industry as a
reminder of the value of preparation, planning, prevention and avoidance
measures which can reduce the need, trauma, cost and disruption of disaster
response.
