Ukrainian Resilience is Seeing Ukraine Through
by James P. Farwell
Russia has unsuccessfully tested Ukraine’s resourcefulness and determination through tactics that target civilian residences and infrastructure. Ukrainian will and passion for the cause of freedom and national sovereignty have thrown Russian back on its heel. Desperate, Russia is using missile and drone attacks that target critical infrastructure. The attacks target non-military targets like power transformers and water plants. The Russians have successfully deprived cities of water and electricity for temporary periods, but the Ukrainians have persisted and shown striking resilience.
We should not underestimate the damage. As many as 1.4 Ukrainian households have lost energy. Ukraine’s large power utility, Ukrenergo, has sustained major damages. National Public Radio interviewed leading Ukrainian energy expert Oleksandr Khrchenko. He said, “when you don’t have electricity in a city, it means you have no water, you have no supply of gas, you have nothing.” https://www.npr.org/2022/10/22/1130742768/ukraine-power-grid-outages-record-damage.
Air defenses have successfully protected major power generation facilities. Russia has adapted by attacking smaller transformers and lesser targets. Efforts to pressure Ukraine by disrupting its business activities and the daily lives of Ukrainian consumers are not new. In the past, Russian hackers compromised power distribution companies in western Ukraine, cutting off power to 230,000 residents. The Russians targeted control centers. They also flooded customer service phone lines with calls to prevent customers from reporting the incidents. https://www.cfr.org/cyber-operations/compromise-power-grid-eastern-ukraine.
Energy giant DTEK faces a $40 million loss after Russian attacks on the power grid. DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko called the losses “catastrophic” and called on the government for financial support. https://www.kyivpost.com/ukraine-politics/energy-giant-dtek-faces-40-million-loss-after-russias-attacks-on-power-grid.html
Rolling blackouts have been common in Ukraine cities. They are predictable and businesses schedule around them. Bars and restaurants do business by candlelight. Others use backup diesel-powered generators to supply their premises. https://news.yahoo.com/as-temperatures-begin-to-fall-russia-steps-up-attacks-on-ukraines-vulnerable-power-grid-190531785.html.

WHAT YOUR COLLEAGUES ARE SAYING ABOUT THE CORPORATE WARRIOR
“This fascinating book takes us behind the scenes to see what corporate heads and business owners have done right, done wrong, and shows how today’s leaders can use the advice to successfully course-correct. I recommend this book as well to former military men like myself. When our initial careers wind down, many of us will serve on corporate boards, or work directly inside corporations, as I now do. For us, these examples serve as vivid reminders of what we, too, can take away from each other’s military tactics and strategies.”
